Split GRP Sprinkler Pump Room Manufactured for Site Installation

A recent sprinkler pump-room enclosure manufactured by Hill Grwp Ltd required a different approach to delivery and installation.

Because of the access restrictions associated with the project, transporting and positioning the GRP enclosure as one complete unit was not suitable.

The solution was to manufacture the sprinkler pump room in two coordinated halves, allowing each section to be transported, lifted and positioned separately before the enclosure is completed on site.

Despite the sectional construction, the ventilation systems, equipment access openings, cable entries and steel double doors were all incorporated during factory production.

A Pump-Room Enclosure Designed Around Site Access

Restricted access can create a significant challenge when delivering factory-built plant rooms and sprinkler pump enclosures.

The finished building may need to pass through a narrow site entrance, travel along a restricted delivery route or be positioned in an area where lifting access is limited.

In these situations, simply reducing the size of the enclosure may not be practical because the pump equipment, maintenance clearances and internal working space still need to be accommodated.

For this project, Hill Grwp Ltd designed the GRP enclosure as two separate but coordinated sections.

This allowed the pump room to retain the required overall dimensions while providing a more practical delivery and installation method.

Manufactured as Two Coordinated Sections

The two halves were manufactured as part of one complete enclosure design.

The section positions, external walls, roof arrangement, internal clearances and final site connection were considered from the beginning of the manufacturing process.

This is important because a split-delivery enclosure must still work as one complete building once the sections have been positioned and joined on site.

Designing the split into the enclosure from the outset helps coordinate:

  • The dimensions of each delivered section

  • The planned lifting and positioning sequence

  • Internal equipment clearances

  • Door and access locations

  • Ventilation positions

  • Cable and service entry points

  • The final completed building layout

The result is a factory-manufactured enclosure adapted to the site constraints rather than a standard building that must be modified during installation.

Pre-Formed Equipment and Cable Entries

The equipment access and cable entry openings were prepared during manufacture.

Pre-forming these openings allows their positions and dimensions to be coordinated with the equipment layout before the enclosure reaches site.

Depending on the project requirements, factory-prepared openings can include provisions for:

  • Electrical cables

  • Control and monitoring cables

  • Pipework routes

  • Equipment connections

  • Ventilation components

  • External services

  • Future maintenance access

Preparing these details in the factory can reduce cutting and modification after delivery.

It also helps the project team confirm that the enclosure openings correspond with the proposed internal equipment and external service routes.

Integrated Ventilation Systems

Ventilation was also incorporated into the two enclosure sections before delivery.

Sprinkler pump rooms may require ventilation to manage internal temperatures, support equipment operation and maintain suitable conditions within the enclosure.

The ventilation arrangement must therefore be considered alongside the pump equipment, electrical components, door positions and external site conditions.

Depending on the specification, Hill Grwp Ltd can incorporate:

  • Natural ventilation louvres

  • High- and low-level ventilation

  • Forced ventilation systems

  • Thermostatically controlled fans

  • Weather-protected external louvres

  • Internal ventilation guards

  • Air-conditioning or additional temperature-control equipment

For a split enclosure, the ventilation positions must also be coordinated with the division between the two sections.

Installing these components during factory production ensures that the necessary openings and supports form part of the original GRP construction.

Steel Double-Door Access

The sprinkler pump room also includes steel double doors.

Wide double-door access provides a practical route for moving equipment into the enclosure and allows suitable access for future inspection, servicing and maintenance.

The door arrangement can be designed around the proposed equipment dimensions and the space available around the completed building.

Steel doors can also be supplied with project-specific hardware and access provisions, depending on the security and operational requirements of the site.

In this case, the doors were incorporated into the split enclosure design so that their position remained coordinated with the internal layout and the final site-assembled arrangement.

Factory Preparation Before Site Assembly

Although the pump room will be completed on site, much of the detailed work has already been carried out under factory-controlled conditions.

The two sections have been manufactured around the final layout, with the principal openings, ventilation components and access systems already in position.

Once delivered, the sections can be individually lifted into place and completed as one sprinkler pump-room enclosure.

This approach retains many of the advantages of off-site manufacturing while providing the flexibility required for a restricted-access project.

It can help reduce:

  • Extensive enclosure construction on site

  • Unplanned cutting and modification

  • Coordination between separate enclosure trades

  • Dependence on suitable access for one oversized unit

  • Installation disruption within a constrained working area

Split Delivery Without Reducing the Required Building Size

A major benefit of sectional construction is that the final pump room does not necessarily need to be made smaller simply because access is restricted.

The enclosure can still be manufactured around the pump equipment, control systems, maintenance requirements and project specification.

Instead, the delivery format is adapted to suit the route and installation method.

This can make split construction suitable for projects involving:

  • Narrow site entrances

  • Restricted internal access routes

  • Limited crane or lifting access

  • Congested construction sites

  • Existing buildings and developed sites

  • Enclosures positioned between other structures

  • Locations where a single large delivery would be impractical

The number and size of the sections can be considered during the design stage alongside the proposed lifting and installation plan.

Frequently Asked Questions

A split GRP sprinkler pump room is an enclosure manufactured in two or more coordinated sections. The sections are transported and positioned separately before being completed as one pump-room enclosure on site.

Sectional delivery may be required where the site entrance, transport route, lifting access or final installation location cannot accommodate a complete enclosure in one piece.

Yes. Cable entries, equipment access openings and other service penetrations can be positioned and formed during factory manufacture using the approved equipment layout and project information.

Yes. Natural or forced ventilation systems can be incorporated during manufacture. Their positions are coordinated with the enclosure sections, equipment layout and external wall arrangement.

Yes. Steel single or double doors can be included. The required opening size and door position can be designed around equipment installation and future maintenance access.

Not necessarily. One of the main advantages of sectional construction is that the completed enclosure can retain the dimensions required for the equipment while the individual delivery sections remain manageable.

The scope of each project is agreed individually. Hill Grwp Ltd manufactures the enclosure around the approved equipment and service requirements, with additional fit-out, electrical, delivery and installation options available where specified.

Yes. Delivery and installation can be included within the project scope. The access route, lifting arrangements, working area and section assembly requirements should be reviewed during the planning stage.
